Shaunavon, Saskatchewan: A Community in Tune

- 13/11/25

Where culture meets creativity, and music brings people together.

Nestled in the heart of southwest Saskatchewan, the town of Shaunavon has long been a hub for creativity, culture, and community spirit. That spirit is now resonating - quite literally - thanks to a stunning outdoor musical installation at the Grand Coteau Heritage and Cultural Centre, the town’s cultural heartbeat.

Listen to our Insight podcast episode featuring Joanne Gregoire, where she shares how the instruments are transforming public programming and why the community has embraced this musical addition with open arms.

A Cultural Hub Embracing Music

The Centre, known for its museum, art gallery, and vibrant public programming, recently added a selection of Percussion Play outdoor instruments to its grounds:

  • Large Babel Drum – soft, soothing tones
  • Pentatonic Tembos – deep and playful tones
  • Diatonic Symphony Freechimes – high-pitched, clear, crisp tones
  • Bell Lyre – bright, resonant tones

Chosen for their accessibility, sculptural beauty, and rich tonal blend, these instruments invite everyone - regardless of age or musical experience - to create spontaneous music.

“When the instruments arrived, we were thrilled,” says Joanne Gregoire, Director of Culture at the Centre.

Community Reaction: Pure Joy

“People just love it. We see visitors stop as they walk by, hear the sounds, and feel drawn in. It’s so inviting - you can’t help but want to join in and play.”

The installation quickly became a favorite gathering spot for families, school groups, and visitors.

“We’ve had a few school groups come for special sessions,” Joanne explains. “A volunteer who used to be a music teacher spent time experimenting with different instruments, playing them together, and discovering how they all sound in harmony.”

A Soundscape Everyone Appreciates

One of the most delightful surprises? The peaceful, melodic soundscape.

“At first, some people were worried it would just be a racket - we’re right in the heart of the community - but it sounds amazing. People really appreciate the music; it draws them in from the street.”
